Very effective and inexpensive without the potential harm of oral medications August 30, 2010 Coffee Geek (Philomath, OR United States) I've been using Salonpas-hot and Salonpas patches for years. The green wrapped ones are menthol type, similar to Icy-Hot. The -HOT version is Capsicum. These are great for larger areas and stay on for a long time. Be patient with the Capsicum ones, they take an hour or more before you start to feel them, but they are really effective for overriding the pain sensation and helping you to function with back pain without taking a lot of oral pain meds. I sometimes cut them down for smaller areas, but they stay on best on flatter areas such as shoulder or back. I do not recommend that you the capsicum ones while sleeping as the pressure of your body on the patch makes it feel hotter. The green boxed ones are also very good, have very little smell, and are very inexpensive. None of the medication comes off on your clothes, and the menthol smell is minimal.
Read up on the potential effects on your liver if you take too much oral pain medication. This is a way to reduce that usage, and it really helps to reduce pain.
better than Icy hot August 8, 2010 J. nguyen i've been using this thing for years, but since there are no asian market where i'm located at this time, Amazon is the best place to find these. they work great on sore muscles and are a lot more convenient to use than cream. they do have the same medicinal smell as Bengay and Icy hot, but since i stick them on at night, it doesn't bother me.
holy wow! August 4, 2010 Krissy.Angel22 (Arizona) I am so grateful that someone handed me one of these to try a few years ago. I would've never believed them otherwise. I have fibromyalgia and deal with pain on a daily basis. My neck gets so bad and causes my head to throb. Being a stay at home mom, these have really helped a lot. I was amazed at how much a little patch could do, and especially one that was OTC.
I have used them on my feet, knees, back, neck, arms, wrists... Being a mom with a young child, not only does the smell of topical creams like Bengay seem like a bad idea, but I worried so much about if he were to touch my skin. I wore a sweater in the summer to cover the cream, which barely worked and lasted fifteen minutes.
There are times when the patch seems to work better than others, maybe just my pain that day or something. Either way, I urge you to give these a chance. They are affordable, stay on, and truly work.
Pain medications usually dont work on me, so to find some relief in a small simple patch was enough to wow me. I'm not going to say I'm pain free, or it's cured my condition, but it really has been of some relief. Costco usually has a great deal on them and thats where I get mine.
Why don't these work for me? June 24, 2010 C. G. King (Horse Country, VA USA) All the positive reviews encouraged me to try these--twice, in case I was missing something--but they don't really help me. This winter I did something to my knee that really slowed me down. It caused me a lot of burning pain and I tried a number of things to get some relief. I put as many as four patches on my knee at once so as to cover a wider area in case I was not targeting the correct area with just one, but if I got any relief, it was minimal. During this time, I fell in the tub and wrenched my other knee. Good Grief! I tried the product on that knee too. It was a different sort of pain so I hoped while the product didn't work noticeably on the one knee, maybe it would work in this other situation, but again, I noticed barely any improvement in the level of pain.
Perhaps it is because I'm somewhat overweight and there is more tissue between the patch and the painful area than may be ideal, but bottom line, they didn't work for me enough to warrant re-buying. Additionally, the odor bothered me even though it is not as strong as other pain relief patch products. I'm sad not to be among those who've had success, but obviously, they don't work for everyone. If you want to try them, I recommend buying a small package to test them out before investing more.
Salonpas work great for back pain! March 11, 2010 Jason Shafer (Miami Beach, FL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Salonpas work great for muscle pain! I use them on my back under my shoulder blades, and also on my shoulders (trapezius muscles). They are very comfortable and relieve pain well for 4-6 hours.
They do not work for situations in which inflammation-related problems are causing the pain. Ibuprofen is better for these things. But if you have muscle pain, try these for temporary relief! :)
